Yoga For Beginners | SuperCurlyGurl


I get asked a lot of questions about how I got started in yoga and what steps to take if you have never done yoga before, and I always say the same thing, “start from the beginning.”

A little bit of a background:

My yoga journey began on December 1, 2015 with the #BeginnerYoga2015 challenge on Instagram, hosted by @kinoyoga and @beachyogagirl. I knew I wanted to do yoga everyday but just didn’t know where to begin or what to do or even how to start. So when I came across one of @kinoyoga’s posts talking about a beginner yoga challenge, I was all about it. All you had to do was follow the hosts, @kinoyoga and @beachyogagirl and the sponsor, @mantraband and make sure to tag the name of the challenge #BeginnerYoga2015 in every post so that our challenge pose is visible to not only the hosts and sponsor but to everyone participating in the same challenge. It was perfect. A challenge where I had to do a yoga pose everyday for 30 days made me so happy. It was going to hold me accountable and make me do yoga everyday which is exactly what I wanted.

@kinoyoga and @beachyogagirl would post the beginner yoga challenge pose the nights before, I would look at them and mentally do the pose in my head so for the following day I would be ready to physically do them. At first I asked my husband to take my pictures, which was ok in the beginning but at times when he wasn’t around and I was ready to do my beginner yoga challenge poses I would have to wait on him to get home which slowed down my momentum. Eventually I smartened up and just filmed myself doing the poses and took still shots of the actual pose (to this day I do this method).

After my first yoga challenge I WAS HOOKED! I fell in love with getting to know my strengths and weaknesses. I became more aware of my breathing, my focus or lack there of, and began noticing my body changing; not my physical body (which also changed) but my inner body. I was more calm and relaxed and I absolutely loved it. From there I couldn’t stop. I seeked out more and more yoga challenges. I seeked out more and more yogi’s and became so inspired by their pictures and videos and their flexibility and even the ones that weren’t so flexible but were showing progress after progress. Everyone was so heart centered and exposed! It was enlightening and it is still enlightening.

I’ve been on my yoga journey for 8 months now and though that may seem like a long time, it’s really not. I still consider myself a beginner. I think I always will because yoga is forever. You’re always learning and you’re always growing. It never ends. I’m amazed at a lot of the poses that I can now get into which I couldn’t get into before and though they are shaky they are improvements.

All this to say is that if you really want to start yoga, just go ahead and start. There are online courses to take if you don’t feel comfortable going to a studio. I personally love The monthly subscription is only $9.95 and it gives you a plethora of classes in all styles of yoga and it also has documentaries and meditations and all kinds of enlightening programs. If you prefer the free route go to YouTube!!! YouTube is the absolute best for free awesome yoga tutorials and some complete classes as well. Or you can start how I started…Instagram yoga challenges. Any way you start it will be the perfect way for you.
