Is It Only Me? Hair Breakage

Is it just me?  Am I the only one who has hair breakage though I am doing everything in my power not to?  I henna my hair, I don’t manipulate it everyday, I wash it once a week, I only finger detangle…. the list goes on and on of the precautions I take to retain healthy hair, so why after all the precautions I take to prevent hair breakage is my hair still breaking?”  I couldn’t understand it.  So I got on the net and began searching for an answer; not only to “how” to stop the breakage, but also for “why” the breakage is occuring and if it was normal.

Well, it’s not just me having hair breakage, thank God.  I see lots and lots of natural hair ladies who have the same issue of hair breakage as do I and they too are treating their hair with delicate touch.  The ladies that stopped their breakage said that they moisturized daily.  Other ladies said that they trimmed their ends every 6 weeks, and then several others spoke of the use of henna for a deep condition.  Considering I have done all of these methods and am still coming up with breakage I have decided to drop the concern and just allow my hair to do what it do, so to speak.  I am going to continue utilizing the curly girl method, also continue to protective style and just all in all not stress about the breakage anymore.  If I get breakage here and there, well then, so be it.  It’s only hair.

I would like other natural hair ladies out there dealing with hair breakage to know that it’s not the end of the world.  If it’s too much of an issue for you and you must stop the breakage completely then I would suggest putting your hair in mini twists, so not to manipulate your hair for at least six weeks, wear a wig, or cut it off and start all over again (which I have thought about on many occasions).

Doing It Now For Love

I came here today with every intention to write something about my hair or just hair in general and then thought about how I didn’t want to do that. Today is my diary blog post; what’s in my head and what I don’t mind people knowing what’s in my head. I am reading this book called “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle, and not that this is the topic of my blog, but in the book he asks the question, or better yet, he has us asking ourselves the question, “am I doing this (action) out of joy and ease? And it made me think, “am I writing this blog from a place of joy and ease? And the answer came to a yes, though if I were going to write my original topic, hair, then, the answer would’ve been a no! Originally I was going to write something about how soft my hair was feeling or how healthy it felt, and though marvelous it may be, it wouldn’t of come from an organic place. Don’t get me wrong, when I write about my hair it is coming from a place of giving and organicism (if that’s even a word lol) but not today. Today is for the moment.

What I would like today is for all of us to be present. If any of us (which I am sure is probably 99%) is looking for constant happiness and peace, stop yourself from looking into the future for that happiness (and if you’re not looking then disregard this blog post lol) or saying to yourself when “this” or “that” happens I am going to be so happy/peaceful/grateful/etc… Because just the thought of you KNOWING HOW YOU ARE GOING TO FEEL IN THE FUTURE, means that right now, right this very instant, you have that feeling to express. The future is an illusion. And this understanding came to me soooooo clearly the other day when I was thinking to myself how I always say, “I am going to be …. when this happens” If I know that I am “going to be” in the future then that obviously means that I have that feeling inside me now, HOLDING ON TO IT, waiting for the right time to let it go. How delusional is that? Why am I going to WAIT till something happens to express the joy within, when I could express that very same joy that I am holding on to waiting for that “right” moment, RIGHT NOW?! You see? I/we have everything we need right now, not 2 days from now or even 5 seconds from now. RIGHT NOW IS ALL THERE IS. So release that joy NOW! That’s what letting go means :)

Infinite love and blessings,

This Method Loves My Hair

I think I found it!!  Yes people, I know I say it a lot but I think I have found my everlasting method for hair happiness and health.  If you are wondering what it is I’ma tell ya.  But first look at these curls:

Can’t get no righta than this here! LOL. Anyway I get these curls from utilizing a certain method called, the curly girl method. What is the curly girl method, you ask?  What it is, is a practice that specializes in utilizing all natural products, ie no sulphates, parabens, or silicons, no usage of combs/brushes and washing the hair with a no-poo (no lather). I believe anyone’s hair will benefit from this method.  I am not an expert, yet, for I just started using the curly girl method at the beginning of this week, but if you click here you will get the full understanding of what this method is. I am just going to tell you how I have been utilizing this method to bring out the most defined curls in my hair and how this method keeps my hair moisturized and curls defined for days.

Ok here we go:  First, I hop in the shower. While in the shower I run my hair under the warm soft water, just letting the water stretch down through my curls till it is completely saturated.  then I grab my Tresemme naturals and squeeze a descent amount (count to 3 then stop squeezing) into the palm of my hand, rub my hands together then smooth the conditioner throughout my hair.  While smoothing the conditioner through my hair, I take that time to detangle.  After I detangle my hair, I keep the Tresemme conditioner in my hair while I clean my body, which normally takes 5 minutes.  Then I rinse my hair out thoroughly, get out of the shower and blot my hair with a t-shirt (I never use a towel anymore to dry my hair).  You want to make sure that your hair stays damp because the next step involves putting a leave-in conditioner in your hair which I believe has the best affect on damp/wet hair.  Apply the leave-in conditioner throughout your hair being sure to penetrate each strand, then once you finished administering the leave-in product, coat the hair with a natural gel then, let the hair air dry.  THAT’S IT!  Nothing more.  You are finished.  Your hair stays moisturized and your curls stay poppin :)

Hair and a Movie

I was preparing my hair for it’s weekly protective style the other evening and while doing so (standing in front of the mirror) my arms, as usual, were beginning to get tired and I was getting a bit impatient with the whole detangling process, then suddenly a pleasant and relaxing thought came to mind as to what I should do for future weekly hair maintenance.  ”I want to watch a movie.  Why don’t I watch a movie while doing my hair?”  And from this pleasant thought came what I now call “hair and a movie”.

Doing your natural hair could be quite a task.  First we have to moisturize our hair then detangle our hair, then divide it into sections, then moisturize it again then seal in the moisture and so on and so forth.  It is such a time consuming process taking care of natural hair.  Why not take this time while managing our natural hair, to sit down in front of the tube to enjoy a movie.  I find that watching a good flick relaxes me and hence keeps me relaxed while doing my hair.  We never want to rush our hair managing process.  It could lead to destruction of our hair strands and lead to breakage.  Why let impatience mess up all of our hard work in getting our hair to its perfect health.  I believe that when we are in a peaceful state of mind, our projects (I consider taking care of my hair a project) turn out as we envisioned; perfect, sound, and just right.

So the next time you are doing your natural hair and you feel the need to rush through it, stop what you’re doing, think about a movie you would like to see that is already in your movie library, put that movie in your DVD/BluRay/VCR (if you still have a VHS) and finish your hair maintenance routine.  I guarantee excellent results.

The Benefits of Consistency

Hello my beautiful people.  For a long time I was wondering why some natural hair ladies hair grows quicker than mine, till I figured out that that wasn’t the case.  Their hair isn’t growing faster, their hair is just retaining length, and it is because they are consistent with their hair regimen. Most of us are familiar with kimmaytube from YouTube, and in my opinion she has the most significant amount of hair growth than any other natural hair lady on the Tube (that I have noticed) and that is all due to what I believe, is her dedication of washing her hair every 7-10 days, no matter what.  Her natural hair growth is astounding.  In 2 years she has accomplished the hair length that I have been working on accomplishing in over 5.  And on that note I have made a promise to myself to stay consistent with my hair regiment for at least 4 months before changing any products or activity dedicated to my hair.  I have learned that consistency and commitment are the two most important ingredients to success in anything that you want accomplished.  So for the next 4 months I will be posting the progress/growth of my natural hair using only the products (Terressentials, castor oil, shea butter, coconut oil, and aloe vera juice) that are in my current regiment and nothing new.  Plus this consistency will help with saving a ton of money LOL.

My Current Obsession: YSL Arty Oval Ring

I have had my eye on these rings for the longest time (4 months to be exact) and I just have to own one of them. There’s only one problem (other than the price), I don’t know which color to get. They are all so lovely and full of character and it’s difficult to match my personality to just one color. If these rings had a lower price tag I would for sure have the entire color selection in my jewelry rolodex, but that is not the case.

I need your help. I am a free spirited, mother of two girls, who is very outgoing and down to earth. With these characteristic/qualities that I told you about myself, which of these colors would you think best matches my person? Oh yeah, and I was born in the month of August, if that would help persuade your decision in any way. I feel these rings are such a statement piece and will go well with any outfit.

HELP ME! I’ve got to have one :)

Feeling Myself: Trying To Channel Dorothy Dandridge

I was going through a few pictures of mine and I was surprisingly happy with the way some of them turned out.  It’s ok to feel good about how you look in a picture especially if you’re one of those unlucky folk (as myself) that thinks they took a nice picture and then once glancing at it, notices the “not so sexy” look that you thought you were giving or the crooked smile that you thought was straight (which is what happens to me way too often).  So when I came across these pictures I felt the desire to publish them for my own vanity.  Yes dammit!  My very own vanity.  I feel I look pretty cute in these shots.  I kind of channeled Dorothy Dandridge in a way; well maybe not Dorothy Dandridge but that doesn’t matter.  Anyway these pictures were taken on my macbook’s photobooth after my bantu knot twist-out.  I put me some makeup on and let loose in front of the booth.  Sometimes you just gots to do you :)

My 2nd Length Check

FINALLY!  I took the time to measure my hair and do another length check.  It has been a long time coming.  The last one I did was about 6 months ago and I was measuring at about 5-6 inches all around my head.  It grew about 2 inches and then I needed to do a trim which took off 1 1/2 inches. And I changed my hair routine throughout my #naturalhair journey. I found that manipulation of my hair caused it to break with the everyday night routines, so I stopped with that, and I also began protective styling in back to back rounds.

Well here is a video of my progress. I hope you enjoy it.
